A celebrant of the permanence of the human through the great traumas of history at the turn of the 20th century and the 2000s, he has been an indispensable hinge and glue between the generation of postwar artists – cantons of myth in solemn tones at the dawn of modernity – and digital natives – untethered by disciplinary fields and territorial connotations. He is the guardian of the complexity and dignity of a premodern material culture in a city that has undergone irremediable mutations from Carlo Levi to the European Capital of Culture. In the 40th year of his career, already celebrated by the XL retrospective, Porta Coeli Foundation presents him with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award.
